This chart
measures kids to 48 inches and includes write-on whimsical stickers to mark the progress of growth. Biblical characters line
the sides with a tidbit of their story that an enterprising parent could use to share Biblical stories and Scriptural truths.
Kids will clamor
to be measured with this vividly illustrated measuring chart.
CLOPPER AND THE NIGHT TRAVELERS Text by Emily King This tale tells the true story from the viewpoint of a
fictional donkey, Clopper. We see the story unfold through his eyes. Unlike most Christmas stories, this one doesn't end at
the birth of our Savior. This book shows us the visits from the shepherds and later the Wisemen, the trip to the temple, the
escape to Egypt and the return to Judea to Nazareth. Through the story runs the thread that God took care of Jesus, Christ
the Lord, in very extraordinary ways. The story includes passages from Scripture. I do have
some concerns about young children being able to differentiate between the fictional Clopper and the reality of the story
told. The story did feel a bit disconnected in some places where I had to go back and re-read the page before. Nevertheless, the story was beautifully
illustrated and while the text is suitable for a young reader, the whole family can enjoy this story.
THE EXTRA PAIR OF HANDS Peta wanted to play, but no one was available. Not even Mum.
Mum said she needed another set of hands to get all her work done. Then she could spend time with Peta. Peta went next door
to ask Mrs. Pitts about an extra set of hands. Mrs. Pitts comes up with the answer that helps both Peta and her Mum. Colorful illustrations bring to life this positive story
of helping. Tommy liked to play ball with Stanley the Seal
after school. One day some boys rough Tommy up and his wheelchair slides into the ocean, but Tommy can't swim. What happens
next changes everything for Tommy and for his friend Stanley. A story of friendship, sacrifice, courage and miracles accompanied
by Collier's colorful illustrations.
September 2007 AM I FORGIVING Erik is excited because snow has closed school for the day and he can go sledding. But when
he tries to make plans and later play with his friends, they turn out to be less than friendly. In his hurt, Erik learns what
forgiveness is all about. Told with humorous, colorful illustrations, the story helps children understand the role
and benefits of forgiving. A good book for parents to use not only to teach forgiveness, but how this is God's best as well.
WHEN DOES GOD SLEEP? Text & Illustrations
Phillip W. Rodgers ISBN 13: 978-0-8254-3631-4 Kregel Kidzone Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies WHEN DOES GOD SLEEP? has
Bailey Bear wondering if God sleeps and where. And, if God sleeps, won't that leave him and others in trouble when things
go wrong? Bailey's mother helps Bailey know a God who doesn't need to sleep and who cares and is always there. Colorful, playful illustrations
accompany this story told in rhyme that is lyrical and fun while imparting a message each of us needs to hear—God is
always just a prayer away. OUCH! SUNBURN Text Donna Shepherd Illustrations Kevin Collier ISBN 10: 1-933090-60-x ISBN 13: 978-933090-60-3 Guardian Angel Publishing Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies Sunburn is a big problem.
Parents, adults and kids are out under the sun without considering the long-term consequences and they can be severe. As a
kid, I seldom thought about sunscreen. Few did. We didn't know that getting burned could one day lead to cancer. It can. It
has happened to friends of mine. A husband of a friend died from such cancer. But kids just don't get
it. Getting the message down to their level is one way to start. OUCH! SUNBURN gets the message of sun protection across with
a simple story told in rhyme with illustrations dished up with color, movement and a hint of humor. Recommended that parents
and kids read this book together—then follow the suggestions.
CANDLE BIBLE FOR TODDLERS
MEMORY GAME Text Juliet David Ilustrations by Helen Prole ISBN 10: 0-8254-7332-2 ISBN 13: 978-0-8254-7332-6 Candle Books/Kregel I tested this game
out on my three grandchildren, ages 7, 5 and 3. It held their interest and provided a learning experience as well. The cards
are small enough for easy playing, yet large enough and sturdy enough for the younger ones. My grandchildren, with Grandpa
assisting, played for probably over an hour, a long time for younger ones. Recommended.
GOD LOVED ME SO MUCH HE CREATED
ME Text & Illustrations
by Jeannie ISBN 10: 0-8254-3709-1 ISBN-13: 978-0-8254-3709-0 Kregel Kidzone Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies With illustrations awash
with color and movement, this story of creation is given a new twist, a personal twist. The author brings creation to a personal
level going through the days of creation with the knowledge He did it specifically for those He created—for me, for
you. The whole of creation is wrapped in Jesus’ death and how God knew it all from the beginning, but loved us so much
He created anyway. A story of color and truth
that will engage the little ones.
POLAR SLUMBER Written and illustrated by Dennis
Rockhill ISBN10: 0-9741992-8-1 ISBN13: 978-0-9741992-8-3 Raven Tree Press $16.95 US Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies Imagination is a wonderful thing
and children are wonderful at projecting themselves into worlds we adults have long, and sadly, left behind. Through easy-to-read
text and almost painting-like quality illustrations, that stay in your memory long after the last page, the author takes us
on the journey of wonder and imagination of a young girl whose snow bear creation becomes part of her dreams. It is a book
to warm the heart on a cold Winter’s day. Beautifully executed.
DO PRINCESSES COUNT? Text Carmela LaVigna Coyle Illustrations Mike Gordon ISBN-10: 0-87358-916-5 ISBN-13: 978-0-87358-916-1 Rising Moon Books $6.95 This counting board book has whimsical
pictures that elicit smiles from children and adults alike. The 1 daisy crown, 2 hiking boots has a rhythm reminiscent of
the Twelve Days of Christmas with a surprise countdown at the end when our little princess runs into 10 bees. A fun way to
teach the little ones to count with a book that will last for many a counting session. I plan to give a copy to my little
princess granddaughter and recommend it for other little girls just learning to count. I WISH I HAD FRECKLES LIKE ABBY/QUISIERA

they are two sides of the same coin. Rosa thinks her friend Abby’s freckles are beautiful and tries everything including
paint and chocolate to emulate her friend’s natural look, so different from her own—with disastrous results. Abby,
on the other hand, thinks her friend Rosa’s glasses are cool, but when she tries on different types glasses—including
googly-eye ones--it just isn’t the same. Both want to be different from who they are until they realize each admires
something about the other. Imagine that! A lesson in accepting others and one’s
self, packaged in an easy-to-read story in both English and Spanish (a plus for bi-lingual or home school families) with illustrations
that shine with the laughter of friendship and love. Recommended.
BENJAMIN BEAR SAYS SORRY Text Claire Freedman Illustrations Steve Smallman ISBN 10: 0-8254-7325-x ISBN 13: 978-0-8254-7325-8 Kidzone $8.99 Often we hurt others by just being thoughtless or not paying attention. Such was the case when Benjamin Bear, full
of bounce, tried to fish with one friend, play in the sand with another and plays a trick on yet another. Each time something
goes wrong that causes a problem for his friends, yet he rushes off without a thought until someone does the same thing to
him. Suddenly he realizes how nice it is that when accidents happen the person says, “Sorry.” This is an easy-reader with a message that all of us need to learn and remember. An appealing story with illustrations
that add vivid color and humor. A fun read for kids and adults alike. JACY’S SEARCH FOR JESUS Text Carol Edwards Illustrations Daniel J Frey ISBN 10: 0-9755314-0-9 ISBN 13: 978-0-9755314-0-2 Majestic Publishing $15.95 Jacy the eagle loves to soar, knowing mother
eagle will swoop him up safe and sound before he crashes to the ground. Though he can’t wait until he is big and strong
enough to fly all by himself, he is secure knowing his mother will always take care of him. Only one day they get separated
and so begins Jacy’s journey looking for home and searching for the Jesus his mother says is always there if he is alone
and in need. A book with stunning illustrations that
explores many of the questions children have about Jesus in this introduction to Jacy’s search. JACY’S MEETS BETSY—Book II Text Carol Edwards Illustrations Daniel J Frey ISBN 10: 0-9755314-1-7 ISBN 13: 978-0-9755314-1-9 Majestic Publishing $15.95 In this book, Jacy meets a very scared
green bunny named Betsy. Together they set out to find about Jesus when they meet Billy Bear who tells them Jesus is right
there with them, but they don’t quite understand and continue on their journey. Jacy learns a little more about Jesus
as he searches for home and Jesus in this second of the Jacy series. Illustrations pop with color as the reader gets to explore
not only Jacy and Betsys’ questions, but his/her own as well.
BUSY BIBLE STORYBOOK Text Jill Roman Lord Illustrations Trace Moroney ISBN 0-8254-5529-4 Kidzone $12.99 Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies In rhyme and with colorful illustrations, the book introduces the little ones to basic Bible stories such as Creation,
Noah, Moses, Daniel, Jonah, and the Nativity. The stories are enhanced with a flap to flip, a tap to pull or a wheel to turn
on every page, making the book interactive. Included are the Scriptural passages for each story. The book is well made and
will take rough handling with little serious damage. I do suggest the giver pull the tabs and slide the wheel several times before allowing the little one to do so him/herself
as, when new, they are a bit stiff to work. They will loosen with use. This storybook will keep those little ones “busy” as they listen to the age-old stories. A good introduction
to God’s Word. GOD IS ALWAYS WITH YOU Text Allia Zobel Nolen Illustrations Trace Moroney ISBN 0-8254-5531-6 Kidzone $13.99 Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies If as adults we sometimes wonder if God is with us no matter what, it shouldn’t surprise us that kids struggle
with the concepts that God is with us always and cares enough to watch out for us. Using a Panda Bear and his mom, the author
takes us on a journey of faith, where little bear’s flights of imagination takes us to the high mountains, on the high
seas, fighting dragons and more as he inquires, “Would God be with me there?” and his mother’s loving, assuring
response, “God is always with you and he loves you like I do.” This is the story to read before bedtime, during a frightening crisis, or just because to assure your little ones that
God cares and is always near. The rich, colorful illustrations are beautifully done and add depth to the story that will be
one that will be read over and over again. HAND COMMANDS The Ten Commandments for little ones By Ann Dunagan ISBN 0-8254-2445-3 Kidzone $5.99 Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies This small interactive board book uses the fingers to help children learn the Ten Commandments. Ex. #5 Honor your father and mother. God wants children to obey and respect their parents. (Give your dad and mom a high five.) Pictures illustrate, words relate, and these vital commands become cemented in little minds. A unique concept that
will help parents as well as kids remember the commands that are the foundation for respect for God, others and self.
CHRISTMAS GIANT FLOOR PUZZLE ISBN 10: 0-8254-7326-5 ISBN 13: 978-0-8254-7326-8 Kidzone $14.99 The 32, large, solid pieces of this puzzle depicting the nativity is splashed with color and joy. This is a puzzle
that will last, will not get lost easily and could become a Christmas tradition. An added bonus is the Christmas story recounted
on the back of the box through word & with pictures direct from the puzzle itself. Our family always reads the Bible story and prays before opening gifts. This year, I’m planning introduce the
Christmas story by having the three grandchildren open the puzzle as their first gift and letting their dad read the story
from the box. What a memorable way to introduce the true meaning of Christmas, with the best gift of all—Jesus.
GOD'S WINTER WONDERLAND Text Allia Zobel Nolan Illustration Melanie Mitchell ISBN 10: 0-8254-5526-x Kregel Publications $8.99 A pair of fuzzy red mittens dominate this
trek into God’s snowy day, from catching snowflakes, to throwing snowballs, eating icicles, making a snowman and seeing
it all not only from a child’s perspective, but also from a child’s perspective of a good God who made such a
day just for him/her. An entertaining excursion into a Winter day with fun, colorful illustrations and, of course, the wonderful,
stroke-able red mittens on every page. THE MISADVENTURES OF ROOTER &

tired of watching out for his younger brother Snuffle, but when they break the rules and danger lurks, Rooter learns lessons
of caring, sharing and obedience. Three short fun stories for the younger
set with the whimsical, vibrant illustrations so characteristic of Collier’s work. THE LONELY LIGHTNING BUG By Donna J. Shepherd By Kevin Scott Collier ISBN: 1-933090-30-8 Guardian Angel Publishing, Inchttp://www.guardianangelpublishing.com Do lightning bugs have feelings? Who knows.
But this short rhyming story about a boy who catches a lightning bug only to let him go, encourages sensitivity to all of
God’s creatures. A sweet, lyrical read with “glowing” illustrations.
BIBLE STORY FAVORITES Text Jill Roman Lord Illustrations Warner McGee ISBN 1-59052-713-5 Multnomah Kidz $7.99 Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies This is one of those first Bible story
books with few words, but rich in illustrations to draw in the little ones. Introduce those little ones to faithful Daniel
in the midst of the lions and the reverence of the birth of Christ and other stories in rhyme that provide the heart of the
story and gives mom and dad a starting point to read the story more in depth from the scripture references. The colorful illustrations
are enhanced by the huge “googly-eyes” on every page that give a humorous twist to the stories and makes the book
one those little tykes will want you to read over and over again.
IT'S A BAD DAY Text: Mary Ellen Friday Illustrations: Glin Dibley ISBN 13: 978-0-87358-904-8 ISBN 10: 0-87358-904-1 Rising Moon Northland Publishing For kids, the smallest problems can seem
great big in a world that is oversized for them. IT'S A BAD DAY is written from the perspective of a child in the midst of
“one of those days” and, hey, we all have those days when clothes don’t fit, the dog won’t obey or
dessert seems much more appetitizing than the veggies. But tomorrow is another day. IT'S A BAD
DAY helps the child put everyday problems in perspective with a touch of humor and colorful illustrations. THE HARBOR LIGHT Text & illustrated by Eric Wells ISBN 10: 0-8254-4155--2 Kregel Publications $11.99 The little lighthouse is tired of always
shining his light. He is more interested in being liked by the boat flitting about in the sea. But when he attempts to act
like the ship, he discovers he hurts and frightens, his light is damaged and the ship never really was his friend. When a
storm moves in, the lighthouse must find his light again or the floundering ship will be lost. A story about the importance of shining
our light. Though the story itself is not overtly “Christian,” the point behind the story as well as the end Note
to Parents make this clear, giving hints as to how to incorporate this into the Gospel story. A cute story with charming illustrations
to draw both children and adults. THE SAD LITTLE HOUSE Text by Catherine Snodgrass Illustrations by Kevin Scott Collier ISBN 10: 1-933090-18-9 ISBN 13: 978-1-933090-18-4 Guardian Angel Publishing, Inc. http://www.guardianangelpublishing.com http://www.guardianangelpublishing.com/sadhouse.htm Harry was a dull, run-down house in a neighborhood
of colorful houses and he was sad. He was sad not just because he was a bit run-down, but because, unlike the other houses,
no family lived in Harry. Then one day a boy and his mom were looking for a house and Harry finally had a chance for a family.
That is, if his wild-life friends could spruce him up a bit. A charming tale of friendship, family and
longing fulfilled. WHEN GOD MADE THE ANIMALS Text Jill Roman Lord Illustrations Warner McGee ISBN 1-59052-714-3 Multnomah Kidz $7.99 In bright, living color this sturdy board
book tells the story of God making the animals with the added fun of “googly eyes” of everything from a shark
to an elephant, eliciting a giggle from a child and a chuckle from the adult who, as much as the child, must shake the book
and make those eyes roll and clack.
Bibleman®Returns in: TERMINATING THE TOXIC TONIC OF DISRESPECT
(DVD) UPC 023755404596 Tommy Nelson $14.99 Bibleman and his sidekicks are on the scene from their mobile
command unit when tensions rise along with disrespect at a local ball park. Will they discover the source of discontent before
it is too late? As an adult I found the live action a bit hokey and wondered
if younger kids would be able to follow the rather, to me, confusing flashbacks. However, my 4 and 6-year-old grandsons stayed
glued to the story and couldn't wait to take it home to watch over and over. After all, the story is geared for 6-10, not
adults as so many movies/videos purporting to be for kids really are. I was delighted with the use of Scripture and Biblical principles
to solve problems. The sets and costumes are fun as well as colorful. Heroes and villains are clearly delineated, which is
also not always the case these days. Finally a hero you want your kids and grandkids
to emulate. As my grandsons asked, "Can we get the next one?" Can't get
a better endorsement than that. SIDNEY & NORMAN, A TALE OF TWO PIGS By Phil Vischer ISBN 1-4003-0834-8 Tommy Nelson $15.99 Norman had it all together and thought he was somebody. Nothing
quite worked for Sidney no matter how hard he tried. The two couldn’t be more dissimilar until they each received a
notice from God for an audience. Norman was ready to receive his just accolades while Sidney knew he was in BIG trouble. But
the meetings didn’t go as planned as each learned what God really wanted. A story for adults and kids alike that gets a very important
lesson across that God loves us—just because and one has no right to lord it over another. The notes from the author
at the end drive home the point and leads us to grace. A story that should be read and read again in every church,
Sunday School and home. THE FATHER WHO WAITED Text Juliet David Illustrations Steve Smallman ISBN 10: 0-8254-7314--3 ISBN 13: 978-0-8254-7314--4 Kregel Publications $6.99 This version of the Prodigal Son is told
with colorful cartoons and a light touch that nevertheless tells the story and brings home the point that Jesus always welcomes
us if we come home to Him. An enjoyable way to introduce the Biblical story as well as a starting point for reading the story
from God’s Word. DO PRINCESSES SCRAPE THEIR KNEES?
Text: Carmela LaVigna Coyle Illustrations: Mike Gordon ISBN 13: 978-0-87358-909-3 ISBN 10: 0-87358-909-2 Rising Moon/Northland Pub. A cute little rhyming story about batting
balls, skating and so much more with our little princess and her brother who doesn’t quite have it all together. The
story can be used to encourage sports and exercise and more. Heads-up: The word Yoga is used in this
context: How do you stay in that yoga position? Ommmm…I keep my muscles in good condition.
Other than this (the word Yoga--used
once--can be deleted or changed to awkward without harming the rhyme. Ommmm--used once--can also be easily
deleted.) the book is an entertaining day with that little princess. ONLY ONE YOU Text & illustrations Linda Kranz ISBN 10: 0-87358-901-7 ISBN 13: 978-0-87358-901-7 Rising Moon $12.95 In this bright, colorful book, mom & dad fish have wisdom
to pass on to their little one before going out into the world such as "Never stop learning," "Enjoy every day," and "Smile
often"--and that advice is just on the inside covers. In the story find "Set aside some quiet time to relax and reflect every
day."
ELMO'S GUESSING GAME ABOUT COLORS ISBN 13: 978-0-87358-905-5 ISBN 10: 0-87358-905-x Luna Rising $5.95 What are Elmo’s favorite colors?
Red, of course, the color of his fur. It is also the color of fire trucks, a sweater, apples and ladybugs. But other colors
also excite Elmo such as orange and yellow and more.
Max Lucado's HERMIE & FRIENDS(tm)
SCRIPTURE MEMORY SONGS (CD) ISBN 1-04003-0790-2 Being Truthful This is a delightful CD filled with lively
songs and scripture on truthfulness using the fun Hermie & Friends characters that encourage kids to know and memorize
God's Word dealing with telling the truth. The CD reminds me of a Critter County tape, which was played so often around the
house when our kids were small the tape wore out. Max Lucado's HERMIE & FRIENDS(tm) SCRIPTURE MEMORY SONGS (CD) fills
that same need for a fun and educational method of imparting God's Word to a new generation. THE HORNED AVENGER (DVD) BRAINFREEZE-DRAWING A BLANK ISBN 1-04003-0732-5 Tommy Nelson $14.99 (6-10) Faced with a villain who sucks out
creativity, the Horned Avenger and his colorful sidekicks must be even more creative to combat this latest threat. A fun adventure for the whole family
with enough silliness for the kids and enough background/plot/deeper references to amuse parents and a solid Biblical/moral
foundation to make this a good interactive family activity, especially when including the extra activities. Recommended for
a positive viewing and learning experience. ELMO'S BIG WORD BOOK EL LIBRO GRANDE DE PALABRAS DE ELMO ISBN 13: 978-0-87358-906-2 ISBN 10: 0-87358-906-8 Luna Rising $6.95 One of our favorite Sesame Street characters,
Elmo, takes us on a tour of his world. We enter his playroom and learn words like door (la puerta), airplane, car, fish and
so much more in both English and Spanish. Elmo likes to talk about his world, whether that is his playroom, the library “Shh”,
a farm with the kitten (el gatito), the horse, the well, the egg and much more. We can’t forget a trip to the park with
the swing (el columpio), the slide and the dog (el perro) and duck, and… Of course after visiting all those places,
Elmo is hungry so he take us to the supermarket for his favorite foods—muffins, milk and macaroni. This board book is sturdy enough
for the little ones and has tabs to take us to our favorite page. This dual-language book makes reading doubly fun, informative
and educational for both parent and child. THE ILLUSTRATED BIBLE: MATTHEW ISBN 1-4003-0812-7 Tommy Nelson $6.99 I’ve read comic-style Bible stories,
but not actual Biblical text in an easy-to-read comic format that brings the Bible alive while, for the most part, preserving
the integrity of both language and message. The illustrations are colorful and well chosen to illuminate the text. (I do,
however, wonder if the size of the text will prove too small for some readers.) Explanation footnotes are also included.
This expression of the Bible is a huge task, but if the book of Matthew is an example, the creators did a credible job, bringing
the Bible a new look, while preserving the sacred text, for a generation raised on video. But I see this as more than just
for kids. Adults who are not readers, adults new to English, adults who want an illustrated perspective will also find this
format useful. I’m looking forward to viewing other books and finally the whole Bible in this format.
VEGETABLE DREAMS/HUERTO SOÑADO Bi-lingual Text: Dawn Jeffers Illustration: Claude Schneider ISBN 0-9741992-9-X Raven Tree Press LLC $16.95 When a neighbor offers to help her
plant a garden, the whole family gets involved. Throughout the growing season, she learns a lesson about hard work and friendship
as well as the satisfaction (and rewards) of a job well done. A simple story told in both English
and Spanish with a short dictionary in the back. The story is embellished with soft Monet-like illustrations I wouldn't mind
framing. A sweet, hope-filled story with many
subtle but profound messages of the joy of working together, the satisfaction found in working toward a goal, that the rewards
far outweigh effort expanded and that we must work to make our dreams a reality. THE HARE AND THE BIG GREEN LAWN Text: Katherine Crawford Robey Illustrations: Larry McDougall ISBN 0-87358-889-4 ISBN 978-0-87358-889-8 Rising Moon $15.96 Hare bought a house with a huge lawn
of green grass, but while his neighbors, Skunk, Bobcat and Raven, work hard to keep up their lawns of clipped, perfect grass,
Hare relaxes and waits. His lawn dies, rain turns it into mud. His neighbors frown, but Hare knows just what he’s waiting
for. The outcome is one of color and fragrance that brings his neighbors together. The book is filled with color and
colorful characters and the ending lifts the heart and makes me want to go out and start a wildflower garden. While, at first, the book may appear
to reward laziness, the objective is quite different—valuing the beauty of our native plant and animal life. It is a
call back to what is really important for our environment and our lives. Beautifully done. GIGI: God's Little Princess THE ROYAL TEA PARTY By Sheila Walsh (text) Meredith Johnson (illustrations) ISBN 1-4003-0800-3 Tommy Nelson $12.99 How do you tell someone the best
news of all? Gigi tries all sorts of ways to tell her friend what she discovered, but everything goes WAY wrong. She almost
gives up until she realizes God doesn't give up on her. A story of God's love and discovering,
in His eyes, we are indeed royalty. Another fun Gigi tale from Sheila Walsh. WILL, GOD'S MIGHTY WARRIOR By Sheila Walsh (text) Meredith Johnson (illustrations) ISBN 1-4003-0805-4 Tommy Nelson $12.99 Will the Mighty Warrior fought battles
with imaginary foes, rescued baby-dolls and made the backyard safe for his baby sister. But, he didn't understand about God's
armor.

A fun DVD with a powerful message that I can’t wait to give my granddaughter. THANK YOU, AUNT TALLULAH Text © 2006 Carmela LaVigna Coyle Illustrations © 2006 Bruce MacPherson ISBN 0-87358-891-6 Rising Moon $15.95 US Bettina is at camp writing letters to her

happened to step-children when the father left for a trip. She expected to be relegated to servant status or even poisoned.

the eyes of a child, in an easy-to-read chapter book format. Recommended for the new step-child. MATTHEW and the MONEY TREE © 2005 Matthew Lynch ISBN: 0-9779608-5-4 Lynch Publishing $14.95 All his life, Matthew listened to his father
tell him stories about a magical money tree, the riches of which would be available to the one who discovered it. The stories
fueled Matthew’s imagination, and he searched for the tree as he carried his father’s green bag that he used to
carry the firewood he found in the forest. One day, he used the bag’s straps to save a man from drowning and then shared
his lunch. That day, Matthew also discovered the money tree. But after stuffing the bag with the money, Matthew had second
thoughts. Matthew learns that happiness comes from
things more important than money. A well-written, colorfully illustrated
morality tale that joins the ranks of stories that should be treasured and passed on.
OWEN’S
WALK Text © 2006 Karen Hill Illustrations © 2006 Carol
Thompson ISBN 1-4003-0694-9 Tommy Nelson Gramma sends Owen on the
path home to his waiting father. Several things along the way confuse or cause him to stumble, but she’s sent along
a book to help him find his way. While to an adult this book
comes across as an allegory for our walk to the arms of our Heavenly Father, a child sees this as an adventure that teaches
God’s love, care and protection. The family relationships are warm and inviting, the adventure just scary enough to
hold the reader’s interest and send a delicious tingle down the spine of the child, the journey propels one to read
on, and the faith message leaves comfort and love. The illustrations are colorful and child-like, appropriate to the target

FRIENDS: STANLEY THE STINKBUG GOES TO CAMP Max Lucado ISBN 1400307341 Tommy Nelson $14.99 Stanley is afraid to go to
camp, because he stinks. He wonders why God made him that way when it drives everyone a way. Sure enough, at camp, it is hard
for the other bugs & insects to get close when Stanley lets off an odor that knocks them out. While others learn to accept
Stanley as he is, Stanley learns why God made him as he is and how fear makes it worse. But when the camp is threatened by
a bully frog, it is Stanley’s special ability that saves them. An entertaining story on
friendship, acceptance and how God really does know what He’s doing when he makes each of us unique and special. This
colorful “bug-filled” video combines the gentle interaction of an adult (as in Mr. Rogers) with artful animation
(as in Disney). The voices of Tim Conway & Don Knotts add a touch of humor as it brings the characters to life. A fun experience for the
whole family. DOES GOD HAVE

Daniel’s story of the Lion’s Den, with a king who likes to eat and Z & H, jealous of Daniel’s position

introduce the story, leading to exploring the “real” story from Scripture.

2006 HORNED AVENGER:
THE BATTLE AGAINST VON BOREDOM Tommy Nelson G This new, bright
and colorful animated feature tells the tale of Von Boredom who is turning everyone into his boring one-dimensional, colorless
minions. The Horned Avenger, who has the power to create reality from his creative drawings, has been created to save the
planet from Von Boredom's evil plot. . When the Horned
Avenger rescues a little girl, the battle of wits and manipulation are joined. Will the Horned Avenger, his sidekick and the
girl be able to outwit Von Boredom and save the world? I first watched
this with my grandkids: almost two-year-old Tori, almost four-year-old Dane and 5 1/2 year-old Devon. Tori was rather oblivious,
but the boys enjoyed not only the feature, but also the "extras" on the DVD--game, how to draw, other scenes, etc. A week later,
that was the first DVD they choose to watch when they visited. Adults may find
the plot simplistic, though there are amusing lines of dialogue thrown out with references only someone older would catch.
Scriptural references are also used, though only one versed in the Bible would realize the origin of the usage. The packaging
says from 6-10, but marketing might also aim for a younger audience--or teens who like "camp." (Older teens love Veggie Tales.) With positive
values focusing on using creativity and imagination, THE HORNED AVENGER provides parents an interesting addition to their
collection of acceptable DVDs.

world of activity from the giant fold-out poster with large colorful stickers, to suggestions after suggestion for activities
such as making Christmas cards, and playing Christmas Alphabet to putting together a Christmas stable. All the activities serve
one purpose--to enhance the simply told story of baby Jesus coming to earth. The story is told under headings so the suspense
can be played out as an adult reads only part of the story, finishing on Christmas.
CHRISTMAS TAILS

Santa can’t make his Christmas run—until his faithful mutt has an idea. Why can’t dogs pull the sleigh?
So begins a delightful tale of how the animals, and not only the canine variety, work together to get Santa on his way. Told in a fashion similar
to Night Before Christmas, the story sparkles with the love and cheer and good will that makes the Christmas holiday so special.
The author even manages to sneak in messages of working together for the good of all and taking care of all God’s creatures,
while making the reader both laugh and wipe a tear. The illustrations are bright and colorful with a touch of poignancy that
enhances the story.
EVERY MONDAY
MORNING © 2005 Linda Hutton (Text) © 2005 Karen O. Murley (Illustrations) ISBN 0-8254-2895-5 Kregel Kidzone $10.99 Mr. Peters and his dog Joey,
wearing matching scarves, had a regular walking routine. Mr. Peters walked Joey around the neighborhood twice a day, stopping
at the bus stop to chat. One day he discovered that Miss Kelsey, who worked at the church foster care center, was worried
because the children didn’t have winter clothes like hats and scarves and mittens. That got Mr. Peters thinking.
Others noticed he was distracted and didn’t linger on his walk any longer, until the day he handed Miss Kelsey a shopping
bag filled with scarves and mittens he’d knitted for the children. A sweet story of kindness
with illustrations reminiscent of my own childhood.

but the time comes when a little one needs to give it up. It isn’t always easy. NO MORE PACIFIER is the story of giving
up a pacifier. It deals with the reasons to do so and the difficulties. It also shows how it is possible and how doing so
is a step to growing up. The illustrations made me
laugh and the story was so practical, yet fun, that I wished I’d had this book when my son was little. He loved his
pacifier. When his sister was born, he kept trying to stick one in her mouth (he no longer used one, but remembered how important
it was to him). She hated pacifiers and kept spitting it out. Our son learned another lesson: not all kids needed them.

JOSEFINA JAVELINA—A
Hairy Tale © 2005 Susan Lowell (Text) © 2005 Bruce MacPherson (Illustrations) ISBN 0-87358-790-1 Rising Moon $15.95 Josefina was a Javelina who
lived in the desert. While her brothers liked to eat all day, Josefina had a dream. She wanted to be a ballerina. Wanted her
name in lights and her fur in tights. She didn’t fit in even at the local Oasis Snack Bar where her brothers liked to
rock and roll, crickets fiddled, toads croaked and bunnies hip-hopped. But they had no ballerinas. Then she heard from her cousin
Angelina in Pasadena—Hollywood—and off Josefina headed to make her mark. So goes the story of how Josefina was
both rejected and accepted in California only to realize she missed her home and friends. Josefina’s dream does come
true, just not in the way she always imagined. Her dream, she finds, needs to include her friends, family and home. Unique characters that give
us a glimpse of life in the Southwest. Action-rich illustrations bring a smile and the story rhyme is fun to read. Another

PATCH THE PORCUPINE AND THE BIKE SHOP JOB Written & illustrated by Scott Nelson © 2004 KRBY Creations, LLC ISBN 0-9745715-3-9 KRBY Creations, LLC $14.95 Patch the Porcupine could fix anything, and he loved helping out his friends. A help wanted sign prompts
him to take a job at the bicycle shop where his skills really come in handy, until Patch discovers one big problem that he
doesn’t know how to fix. If he can’t figure out a way to keep his spines from blowing tires, he’ll lose
his job. Will he discover a solution? This is a very upbeat, fun story with a can-do attitude that also offers practical step-by-step advice
of how to fix a flat bike tire. The colorful illustrations caught the light-hearted, optimistic spirit of the story, bringing
the likable characters to life. A story any child would enjoy and a story a parent can use as a teaching moment about dealing with
problems and frustrations with a positive attitude.
MR. GEORGE AND THE RED HAT (2004 Children’s Book of the Year Award Finalist by ForeWord Magazine) Written & illustrated by Stephen Heigh © 2004 KRBY Creations, LLC ISBN 0-9745715-2-0 KRBY Creations, LLC $18.95 Mr. George the squirrel finds
a doll's hat and finds it useful for holding nuts or wearing or for other things. He likes his hat, but when a mother bird
needs a place for a nest, he willingly gives it up. In this age of me first,
we don’t see many books about self-sacrifice and the joy it brings. This beautifully written and illustrated story resurrects
the value of helping others and the feelings of satisfaction it brings. The illustrations could easily be framed and hung
on the wall, drawing the viewer into the soft, resonances of the park home of the animals. A “warm fuzzy”
book to read and reread.
MAGIC COLORS Teach Your Children
the World of Color © 2004 by Debra K. Pollack ISBN 1-4120-4391-3 Trafford Publishing $8.50 Reviewer: Kay Tira Debra Pollack’s MAGIC
COLORS book, illustrated by “The Wiz,” is a work of simple rhyme with instructional tasks (“find the yellow
suns” and “find the orange fruit,” etc.). A 16-page booklet, Pollack’s work provides parents or siblings
an easy task of teaching and reinforcing color identification. The text itself is formatted
in all “caps,” rather than upper and lower-case font. The tie-in of color with “magic” is questionable
from this reader’s perspective. Strictly for use in color instruction and simple rhyming pattern, the book would be
effective.
LENNY LOSES HIS LUNCH © 2005 Dan Taylor and Damon J. Taylor ISBN 0-8254-3871 Kregel Kidzone $10.99 Some kids want so much to be part of the crowd they end up agreeing to actions that they do not like
and that make them feel bad about themselves. In this re-telling of the Daniel and the Lion’s Den story, one of the
lions deals with just such an issue. He finds himself being a follower instead of standing up for what he knows is right—until
Daniel is thrown in the pit and he hears God speaking to him The illustrations captivate and the text pulls the reader into the story. Parents are given suggestions
as to how best to use the book and are given discussion questions. This is a different way to approach this problem in a non-threatening
fashion. It can help equip a child to stand up and can be a lead-in for parents (or other adults) to share
the true Biblical story. (And explain the difference between real and make believe built on something basically true.)
C IS FOR COYOTE © 2002 Andrea Helman © 2002 Photography Art Wolfe
and Gavriel Jecan ISBN 0-87358-798-7 Rising Moon $15.95 This alphabet book rises
from America’s Southwest environment with stunning photos and simple but informative text that acquaint us with Native
Americans, the pensive coyote, the giant Saguaro cactus, the Pueblo, the owl and so much more. Each letter helps us better
understand the wonders of the Southwest. Example: D is for Dune Like rippled white snow,
huge mounds of sand form dunes at White Sands National Monument. The dunes are always on the move as strong winds blow the
sparkly crystals up one side and w-h-o-o-s-h-! down the other. Warning for young-earth creationists.
There is a couple of references to millions of years ago, but these are easily changed to simply “very old.” These
should not keep anyone from purchasing this beautifully, carefully-crafted alphabet book. An alphabet book worth a look from
adults as well as the younger set.

provision for Elijah is told with colorful illustrations and a Raven the little one can’t help but like. Easy to read
and fun story with a message of God’s provision in time of need. I DON’T SEE ANY BEARS. DO YOU? © 2004 Theresa Howell (Text) © 2004 Larry Jones (Illustrations) ISBN 0-87358-862-2 Rising Moon $7.95 http://www.narthlandpub.com A bright, colorful and fun
board book that takes the reader on a journey though an animal park. Example: Well, kids, here
we are in the park. Let’s see what animals
we can spot. As we read through the story,
we look for all sorts of wild creatures from bears to owls. Each page gives us further opportunities to try and “spot”
the wild creature and count how many are on the page. Glow in the dark eye stickers are also included to be added for fun
on this family camping trip. A great way to introduce
little ones to God’s creatures and to encourage them to “discover” the different animals and count them.
It would also give adults an opportunity to use the book as a door to introduce more information about these animals. A book for families, libraries,
churches and schools.

COLORS © 2004 Nancy Twinem ISBN 0-87358-851-7 Rising Moon $5.95 http://www.northlandpub.com Not every day a baby
board book has a gecko as the main character. This gecko is a true gecko of the Southwest. While the simple, clear text helps
the little one learn colors, the rich illustrations ties those colors with the terrain—land, sky and fauna--of the Southwest.
This book just might prompt families to plan a vacation. This book makes the gecko one cool character. Fun for both the adult
who reads this book and the child with whom it is shared.
THE TORTOISE
AND THE JACKRABBIT © 1994 Susan Lowell (Text) © 1994 Jim Harris (Illustrations) ISBN 0-87358-586-0 Rising Moon $15.95 http://www.northlandpub.com This retelling of the rabbit
and the tortoise story adds a Southwestern flavor with a roadrunner (to mark the course, of course) a rattlesnake to draw
the sssstarting line, not to mention a buzzard, an eagle, a coyote and more. The old, wise tortoise challenges the upstart
young jackrabbit. Of course, the rabbit takes off like a shot while the tortoise makes her tortuous journey. We hear the sounds
scritch-scratch, “see” the giant saguaro (with pronunciation sa WA ro), pass the many creatures and fauna native
to the land. This story includes obstacles
not in the original story, such as a vehicle that almost runs tortoise down. The story ends with the tortoise winning as the
jackrabbit sleeps, but the note at the ends gives us the true purpose of the book—to make us aware of how fragile the
population of both the tortoise and the jackrabbit really is and a simple encouragement for each of us to consider the need
to preserve the wild desert for both animals and people to enjoy.

lessons of God's protection, patience and provision as they hear the stories read of Balaam, Elijah, Daniel and Jonah, as
they view the colorful illustrations and as they feel the lion's mane, touch the whale's tail, feel the bird's beak and more. The Biblical

HOW DID BIBLE
HEROES PRAY? © 2004 Mona Hodgson (Text) © 2004 Hallie Gillett (Illustrations) ISBN 0-8254-2778-9 Kregel Kidzone $10.99 Reviewer Carolyn R. Scheidies As Hodgson points out in
the beginning, kids are curious. They wonder what prayer is all about and what difference it makes to them. This book explains
by showing first how a Biblical character prayed, then how that applies to today. Example: Jonah was swallowed by a
big fish And talked to God about his
trouble. (Jonah 2:1-2 You can pray when you are
in trouble, too. This book unravels the mystery
of prayer, bringing it down to a level everyone can understand. The point is made that how
we pray, the position we pray in—standing or kneeling—God hears. We can pray anytime and any place. Excellent
introduction to prayer. THE BIG BOOK

the telling of these fiery stories from the flaming sword that sent Adam and Eve from the garden to the fiery chariot that
whisked Elijah into heaven. Each retelling is a short, yet accurate portrayal of the story, with the Biblical reference given,
along with an illustration that draws the eye and paints a vivid picture in the mind. The kid-friendly stories
and high-impact illustrations make a great beginning for devotional time either with family or at bedtime. PET PARABLES Volume 1 © 1991, 2004 Neta Jackson
(Text) © 1991, 2004 Anne Gavitt
(Illustrations) ISBN 1-8254-2938-2 Kregel Kidzone $12.99 Reviewer Carolyn R. Scheidies Read about the momma cat
who learns things aren’t always what they seem and that looks aren’t the whole picture. Based on Phil. 2:3b, the
first story “The Cat who Smelled like Cabbage” gives us a glimpse of snobbery and kindness, easily translated
to our world. The second story “The
Duck who Quacked Bubbles” based on Phil. 2:14-15, draws us into a world of different ducklings, one that complains about
everything until he almost loses his family. A note to parents and teachers
after each story offers further information, questions and helps. Accompanied by vivid pictures,
these stories paint a picture that helps adults and children a like deal with prejudice, complaining and tolerance in a non-threatening
fashion. The stories are reminiscent of stories I read and loved as a child. PREACH, PAUL!
© 2004 Carolyn Nystrom (Text) © 2004 Lion Hudson (Tim Dowley
& Peter Wyart) Illustrations ISBN 0-8254-3333-9 Kregel Kidzone $10.99 Reviewer Carolyn R. Scheidies This picture book tells the
story of Saul and how he went from persecuting Christians to becoming a missionary for Jesus. This book has more than the
usual couple words per page and would qualify as a first reader for those who are beyond most picture books in reading ability.
The story is well told and
has surprising depth for a book meant for the younger set. Both children and adults get a solid handle on Paul’s life
and what changed him from hating those who loved Jesus, to one who loved others instead of hating them. The colorful illustrations
add depth to the re-telling of Saul/Paul’s incredible story. Can’t wait to introduce this one to my grandkids. MY LITTLE BOOK

© 2004 Tim Dowley (Text) ISBN 0-8254-7280-6 Kregel Kidzone $14.99 This is one book I plan to give my oldest grandson. Along with his parents, he'll have fun doing all the activities
in this book and may never even realize he's learning Bible stories along the way. Help Noah build his ark. Join Abraham on his journey to the Promised Land and follow Joseph to Egypt. Be with Moses
when he receives the Ten Commandments and with Samuel as he hears God voice in the night. Be with David as he fights Goliath,
Solomon building the Temple and be in on Jonah's adventure with the big fish. This book is packed with lots of fun activities along with stories told in an adventure style. Great for an older youngster
to do alone, for family times or classroom use. IF YOU GIVE A BOY A BIBLE © 2004 Andy Holmes ISBN 0-8254-5513-8 Kregel Kidzone $10.99 This colorful and fun story may give your boys ideas, so watch out. Example: If you give a boy a Bible… He may you to read it to him…. When you get to a story with a fight scene… He may want to act it out. The story is fun, but with a serious purpose. The idea is that as you read the book, you'll encourage your child to
want to know the Bible stories. Once he knows them, he may share them and end up wanting to give a Bible to a friend. Interesting concept story that may encourage not only the boy, but the parent to get into the Word and pass it on.
WHO DID IT? © 2004 Ron Mehl and Jeannie St. John Taylor ISBN 0-8254-3168-9 Kregel Kidzone $12.99 Royalties to be donated to Compassion Ministries. Compelling illustrations and text draw the reader into this powerful book based on the questions Job asked God. Very
kid-friendly, this book leads into the most important truth of God as creator and sustainer who loves you and me. Example: Who has explored the springs where the sea bubbles out? Who has walked around the deepest part of the ocean,
looking in the caves and churning up the sand? Many adults skip the book of Job. This book brings many of Job's questions down to a level that may encourage adults,
as they read to their children, to open their Bibles to discover the wisdom of Job. A beautifully written and illustrated book that should have a special place in a child's library. DUNCAN CARRIES A KING © 2004 Dan Taylor and Damon J. Taylor ISBN 0-8254-3869-1 Kregel Kidzone $10.99 Duncan the donkey feels lower than low. All his friends, the horse, the camel, even the ox have jobs using their special
gifts, but why did God create him to be so useless? So begins the tale of Duncan the donkey who wants a special job like his
friends. But what can he do? When Jesus sends his disciples on a special mission, Duncan finds he has a most important job—carrying the king
into Jerusalem. He isn't useless and God had a plan and purpose for him after all. The story not only teaches about Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, but also about God's timing and plan for each life. Duncan's
story gives parents the opportunity to help their children realize they, too, have special gifts and talents.

BEGINNING WITH
GOD My Very Own Devotional © 2003 Steve T. Barclift
(text) © 2003 Angus Hudson LTD (This
edition) ISBN 0-8254-2044-X Kregel Kidzone $14.99 Short, age-appropriate stories
draw the reader into the lives of the Kenton family as they meet the many things life throws their way. Organized around the
seasons in 52 units, this book explores the many issues that we face every day from having a bad day at school or stealing
to prayer and death. For a family with younger children, this would be a way to initiate family devotions. Older children
can use the book to begin their own habit of daily devotions. But this book
is more than a Bible story with a contemporary application, though it has that. It also includes questions, memory verse,
a prayer and activities at the end of each unit/story as well as a topical index to help parents explore specific issues.
Recommended for families.

and wonderfully made. Jared wonders about how God made him. As he explores the world around him and asks questions, he comes
to some surprising conclusions. A book filled with whimsical illustrations and a timeless message told in a way to make this
a favorite. I WONDER WHO

game for his birthday he has no idea how it will take over his life or the decisions it will force him to make. This colorfully
illustrated book told in fun rhyme deals with an important issue of priorities. This is a book both parents and kids can use
to help keep things in perspective. While this book deals with the problem
of addiction to a video game, as the book points out, anything that we put before God and other priorities is wrong. Some
things just need to be kept in balance. Good way to approach the subject as
a family. NOAH'S ARK © 2003 CR (Holdings) Ltd. ISBN 0-8254-7282-2 Candle Books US Distributor: Kregel

families to share, especially if someone within the family has been adopted, and even more so if it was a foreign adoption. AM I TRUSTING © 2004 Jeannie St. John Taylor (writer & illustrator) ISBN 0-8254-3721-0 Kregel Kidzone $12.99 When Erik has to stay overnight with

LEARNING ABOUT
THE BIBLE Text © 2003 Lion Publishing
(By Lois Rock) Illustrations © 2002 Maureen
Galvani ISBN 0-316-76696-8 Warner Faith $9.95 Kids have lots of questions
about the Bible. Rock asks some of these same questions: What is the Bible?, Are the Bible stories pretend or real?, Is Jesus
in the Bible? And many others. One of the answers: We read the Bible to learn
about Jesus and to learn to follow him. The answers provide opportunities for parents and grandparents, even teachers to share
their faith. The answers, which are also listed together at the end, can also help parents who struggle with their own answers.
A good book for adults and children to share and learn together.
Retelling & illustrations © 2004 Jean Marzollo ISBN 0-316-74138-8 Little, Brown and Company $15.95 This hardcover book retells the story of David and Goliath in a manner
sure to appeal to a child’s sense of story and adventure. The illustrations have a childlike quality that will draw
them into the world of David the shepherd boy who’s belief in God fells a giant and saves a nation. Marzollo uses sheep frolicking along the page bottom to pose questions
and make comments, giving opportunities for parents to further discuss aspects and ramifications of the story. © 2003 N. L, Sharp Illustrated by ISBN 1-886225-91-5 Dageforde Publishing, Inc. $17.95 Robert loved bears, bears of all kinds. He is excited when his mother
tells him he not only gets to be in his Aunt Jane’s wedding, but he also gets to be the ring “bear.” Of
course he expects something very different than the adults. What follows is a sweet story of a child’s perception of
an adult world. While flower girls have their stories, few have taken the time to
tell the story of the little ring bearer. Sharp provides a sweet story, illustrated beautifully, that makes a great gift for
any young man—especially one who will be a ring “bear.” Text © 2003 Lion Publishing

good book for adults and children to share and grow together. PUDGE ATE THE PROPHET A Big Fish Tale © 2003 Dan Taylor& Damon J. Taylor Illustrated by Damon J. Taylor ISBN 0-8254-3868-3 Kregel Kidzone $10.99 This book tells two stories. It is a solid retelling of the Biblical story of Jonah with fun illustrations. It is also
the fictional story of the big fish that swallowed Jonah. This second story helps children appreciate how God not only made
them special just the way they are, but also that he has a plan and a purpose for each life. It is an interesting mix. My only concern is that parents help the child understand the difference between real and make believe so the child
doesn’t also come to believe Bible stories are just stories, too.
Text Trace Moroney © 2003 Illustrations Allia Zobel-Nolan Text: © 2003 Reader’s Digest Children’s Publishing, inc. Kregel Kidzone $12.99 Many of us have counted stars. In this fun children’s book,
Little Bear counts his blessings as he counts the stars. The blessings you give me are like stars in the sky. I couldn’t count all of them—hard as I try. So tonight as I stargaze, I’ll just list these TEN. For starters, thanks Lord, for my new whiskered friend. This begins Little Bear’s star count down. As each page is turned
fewer stars show in the sky of this hard-back book with cutout, foil stars. This is not only a fun book to read to your little
ones, but also a good starting point to talk about being thankful for God’s blessings. This is a keeper. Text & illustrations © 2003 Jean Marzollo ISBN 0-316-74132-9 Little, Brown and Company $15.95 This brightly illustrated hardcover book retells the story of Daniel
and the lions’ den with a little twist. The illustrations will appeal to children as they hear the story of Daniel told
simply and clearly. What makes this book unique are the ants marching along the bottom
of each page asking questions such as Why DID the king pick Daniel? With the answers—He knows him. He likes him. Daniel’s
smart. This book, while enjoyable for the story and picture, also opens up
opportunities to further explore the story through the ants’ questions. A fun and unique presentation of Daniel’s
story. © 2003 Donna Wyland Illustrations Lynne Marie Davis ISBN 1-57921-633-1 WinePress Publishing $15.95 This book builds on a child’s need for the concrete. The illustrations
and text give substance to the concepts of a heavenly home as well as the fruit of the spirit. The salvation message is made clear while taking the scary aspect
out of a far away place called Heaven. This book should be on the shelf of every parent trying to teach a young child about
Jesus and heaven. I can see this being used for the child who has or will soon lose a loved one, even for a terminally ill
child. Beautifully and sensitively done.
Text © 2003 Lion Publishing
(By Lois Rock) Illustrations © 2003 Maureen
Galvani ISBN 0-446-53298-3 Warner Faith $9.95 No one asks more questions than little children. They eagerly seek
for knowledge. This book takes those early questions such as “Who is Jesus?”; “Was Jesus teaching special?”;
“Where is Jesus now?” and many more. The questions are answered at a level a small child can understand. The pictures
are simple and colorful, well illustrating the text. While I would have liked to have the need to “choose”
to accept forgiveness stated more clearly, this book will help parents answer many of those questions asked by their little
ones and provide openings to continue discussions. © 2003 Lion Publishing (By Lois Rock) Illustrations © 2003 Carolyn
Cox ISBN 0-446-53299-1 Warner Faith $9.95 This book takes us from creation to the death and resurrection of
Jesus Christ in short, easy to read and understand stories. The key themes and stories of the Bible are retold in an engaging
fashion accompanied by warm, inviting illustrations. Page 130 Example Ending
of the story about the Good Shepherd who looks for his one lost sheep: Jesus looked directly at the religious people who had
been muttering about him. “God is like that shepherd,” he said. “The angels in heaven celebrate when people
who have gotten their lives in a mess change their ways and come back home to God.” In the entire book I offer only three cautions: Joseph is portrayed
not as a young man committed to following God no matter what, but a spoiled brat, the story of the crossing of the Red Sea
to escape the Egyptians pales in comparison to the miracle God produced, and the paraphrase of the Lord’s Prayer is
both incomplete, and not as rich or accurate as I would have liked. However, this is only three cautions and in context does little to
detract from a Bible story retelling that, for the most part, is sensitive, compassionate, and faithful to the Biblical accounts
told. I see this not only as a first Bible for little ones,
but a good introduction for new Christians of any age to give them an overview of the Bible.
I HAVE A FRIEND Series: Tough Stuff For Kids By Heather Gemmen Illustrator: Luciano Lagares
ISBN/SPCN: 0781438535 Cook Communications $5.99 Not every little one is as
gregarious as our oldest grandson (almost 4). Many, like our youngest grandson (2) find themselves rather shy in the presence
of others. This book tells the story
of a little boy in a group of children. He asks God to help him with his fears and to help him find a friend, even though
he finds it hard to reach out. God answers in a way that
gives shy children confidence that they can be themselves and still find friends. ==============
